Mental illness can happen to anyone

‘Mental Illness Awareness Month’ reminds us that mental illness concerns everyone. In our last article, we referred to corporate wellness and the importance of maintaining a healthy workplace environment. Mental illness very much aligns with this.

A few years ago, the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that depression is the leading cause of ill health and disability, with 7.5% of people living with disability in 2015. ‘’With work-related stress and healthcare costs on the rise, the need for corporate wellness cannot be overstated.’’

What can we do?

Employers must recognise the need to avoid work-related stress by having reasonable expectations and ensuring the work environment is conducive to a relaxed atmosphere. We all, however, need to take action to try to avoid what is now commonly referred to as neurodivergence. This can include Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia and others. So, what can we do about it?

A fit body is a fit mind

In an article about this ‘Mind Wise’ says, ‘’Studies have shown that exercise can alleviate anxiety and depression while also reducing the risk of physical illnesses. Individuals living with mental illness often face shorter lifespans and are at a higher risk of developing diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.’’

Relaxation techniques and pastimes

Yoga and other forms of relaxed movement like dancing and swimming or just taking peaceful walks and long baths all help one to wind down after facing the stresses of the day. This assists with better sleep too – essential to mental well-being.

Financial peace of mind

One of the greatest forms of stress is dealing with inadequate financial protection against the unexpected – like critical illnesses. Dread disease cover for the critically ill, and income protection particularly for people not deemed to be critically ill but who might need long periods of mental rehabilitation, are essential.

With over 30 years of experience assisting people to grow and protect their income, Hereford Group is critically aware that mental illness can happen to anyone, so talk to one of our Financial Advisors to ensure it is far less likely to happen to you because you will have the best medicine of all – peace of mind!
