Make Your Money Work Smarter This Tax Season!

As the new year begins, it’s the perfect time to review your financial health and ensure you’re making the most of tax-efficient savings tools available in South Africa. Two key instruments to consider are Retirement Annuities (RAs) and Tax-Free Savings Accounts (TFSAs), which offer unique benefits for long-term financial planning and tax savings.

The power of tax-efficient savings

RAs and TFSAs are designed to help South Africans achieve financial security while enjoying significant tax advantages. But how can these tools work for you?

Retirement Annuities (RAs):

An RA is a personal retirement savings product that allows you to contribute up to 27.5% of your annual taxable income (capped at R350,000 per year) tax-free. This not only reduces your taxable income but also encourages disciplined saving for retirement.

Funds invested in an RA grow tax-free, meaning you won’t pay tax on interest, dividends, or capital gains. Upon retirement, one-third of your RA savings can be taken as a lump sum, with the first R550,000 of the withdrawal being tax-free. The remaining balance must be used to purchase an income-generating annuity, securing your financial future.

Tax-Free Savings Accounts (TFSAs):

Introduced in 2015, TFSAs have become a popular option for savers looking to maximise returns without the burden of taxes. South Africans can invest up to R36,000 per tax year (limited to a lifetime contribution of R500,000), with all returns, whether interest, dividends, or capital gains, completely tax-free.
TFSAs are ideal for medium- to long-term savings goals and offer unparalleled flexibility—you can access your funds at any time without penalties. However, exceeding contribution limits can attract punitive tax penalties, so careful planning is essential.

Why start now?

The earlier you begin contributing to these vehicles, the greater your opportunity to capitalise on compound growth. Starting early in the tax year also ensures you maximise your annual limits while securing your future financial stability.

Professional guidance is key

At Hereford Group, we specialise in creating tailored financial plans that align with your goals and leverage tools like RAs and TFSAs. Our expert advisors can help you navigate these options, ensuring your tax health is robust and your long-term savings thrive.

Fun in the Sun should never end in financial ruin!

We’re well into the holidays now and even as you read this you could be on the beach, or at the pool soaking up the Sun. Well, we all need a well-earned break but don’t underestimate the potential danger of the harmful UV rays emitted by the Sun.

Sure, we all love to go home with a golden brown tan, but the price you pay for it may be a life-threatening and financially crippling one too. Yes, we are referring to Skin Cancer, the critical illness commonly induced by overexposure to the Sun.

Take precautions

We have been told repeatedly in awareness campaigns to apply a strong Suntan lotion, water resistant and at least a factor of 50+ when in the Sun. We also need to cover up if exposed for a long period.

This may sound extreme but the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) reports that Skin cancer is the most common cancer with about 20,000 reported cases every year and 700 deaths – in South Africa alone!

Protect your family and your finances

Skin Cancer is also one of the many Critical Illnesses that can leave you financially destitute if you are not protected against the losses incurred by exorbitant extra medical bills and a potential loss of income.

Talk to your Financial Advisor about Critical Illness Cover, a lump sum paid out to assist you in dealing with such unexpected occurrences, – and Income Protection Cover. These policies can save your lifestyle and your future so let’s ensure that your fun in the Sun never ends in financial ruin!

Prioritise financial security

Hereford Group has, for over 30 years, experienced the worst-case scenarios that can befall our clients, so we build an element of protection into every wealth portfolio. Talk to us today about yours – and let’s review the year past and make some solid plans for the year ahead.

Many thanks to all our clients, friends and service providers who have supported us in 2024. As we say, ‘how you make your money is your business – but maximising it is ours,’ so, together, let’s make 2025 your best year yet!

Ensure that you and your legacy survive the festive season!

Once again, we are on the threshold of the holiday season and as much as we think of it as a time of relaxation and merriment, we can’t ignore the sobering statistics we hear every year about fatalities on the roads.

Last year 1,427 people died in road accidents in South Africa over the 2023/24 festive season. Road deaths are not the only causes of fatalities either. All travel carries with it an element of risk, and although we should not be put off it by this we should, especially if we have families, ensure that we take the necessary precautions to try to avoid these outcomes and have everything in place to protect our families in the event of the worst-case scenario.

Be prepared – an old motto!

The old Boy Scout’s motto of ‘be prepared’ simply makes sense. If you are travelling on the roads, you are reminded every year to take a safety check on your vehicle to ensure it is up to scratch which would include things like having good tyres and unimpaired vision etc. but you also need to ensure your legacy is intact!

Ensure that you have a legally binding and compliant will and remember to update it before travelling if anything changes. Even more importantly, if you are not sure that the finances you have accumulated until now will leave your family comfortable when they no longer have your income to rely on, take out Life insurance.

It is the most affordable insurance, and the payout can be substantial even if you die sooner than you had planned for. Providing that the beneficiaries are named, it also pays out instantly, something your family will be grateful for as the wrapping up of estates can be lengthy.

Most outcomes are in our control!

In November many men grow moustaches as a light-hearted initiative to raise funds and create awareness of a serious subject – Prostate Cancer and other men’s critical illnesses. We have written quite extensively on this subject in the past and more can be found in our insights pages.

It is also a month we are made aware of those suffering from disabilities as we celebrate South Africa National Disability Rights Awareness Month. Disability is the consequence of an impairment that may be physical, cognitive, mental, sensory, emotional, developmental, or some combination of these, and it could be present from birth, or occur during a person’s lifetime.

Unfortunately, disability is often caused by an accident or critical illness that renders one unable to continue working – at least for some time.

What can we do about it?

These commemorative anniversaries should always remind us that we may face short-term, long-term or even terminal illness but we can at least ensure that we are financially able to get through it and still give ourselves (or at least our families) a great future. It just takes the right planning and structuring of our financial portfolios.

It is a good idea to be fully armed with a couple of policies that can make life a lot easier if we face prolonged critical illness – or are made disabled during our lifetime. Critical illness (or Dread Disease) cover and income protection coupled with disability cover will not only assist with what can be crippling medical bills but enable us to continue earning as we have been in the past – and most importantly, avoid eroding the financial wealth we have created up to this point!

30 years of knowing

For over 30 years Hereford Group Financial Advisors have been structuring wealth creation profiles for individuals and companies, tailor-made to their unique specifications, and always with an element of income protection included in the mix.

Talk to us and let us do the same for you, because fortunately, despite the things that life might throw at us that we can’t control, with our financial knowledge and experience most outcomes are in our control!

Will your Will be what your family will really need?

We recently observed ‘Wills Week’ when we were reminded of the vital importance of creating a Will. Ensuring that it is fully compliant and legally binding, however, is often overlooked.

Furthermore, there are many inclusions to a will that could make a big difference to your family if certain unexpected circumstances arise, so the question is ‘’will your Will be what your family really need?’’

What makes it compliant?

Firstly, to ensure that your legacy will be observed in the way you want it to be, a Will should preferably be drawn up by an Attorney or a Financial Institution that fully understands and implements important legalities of the document itself, like who should sign it, credible witnesses etc.

Important inclusions

The Will must include a comprehensive list of your assets and your chosen beneficiaries, and it is essential to appoint reliable, financially capable guardians for children – plus a qualified, experienced Executor to distribute the inheritance of minors and administer the expedient wrapping up of the estate.

With effective inclusions and astute estate planning, you can even prevent your family members from losing their inheritance to their creditors should this arise.

Life Insurance and Estate planning is essential

Having drawn up an effective, legally binding will, the next thing you need to do is ensure that your family is financially protected when you’re no longer around – and there’s no better way to achieve this than through taking out effective Life insurance.

It is the least expensive cover with potentially the largest payout and, providing your beneficiaries are named, it is paid out instantly on your death – unlike many other aspects of your estate.

Consult the professionals

At Hereford Group we believe in the efficiency of effective Estate Planning and this is why it is an important division of our company. We can ensure that the wealth that we assist you in creating will also protect and be enjoyed by your family long after you are gone.

Talk to us if you need expert advice on all matters relating to Wills and Estate planning. We are with you, in the living years – and beyond.

These critical illnesses take a massive toll without financial protection

This is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time that campaigns make us more aware of the cancer that has claimed the lives of many, yet with regular check-ups and the correct testing can often be prevented or at least minimised. We have written extensively on this and you need only visit our insights page to learn more.

Commencing on 28th October we also commemorate National Stroke Week, something just as important as strokes affect both men and women and according to the Department of Health, approximately 60 people die every day in our country as a result of strokes!

According to the department, ‘’Knowing the signs of a stroke and seeking immediate medical help can improve the outcome of the stroke. The symptoms appear suddenly and often there is more than one at a time.’’

To learn more about these symptoms, Stroke Week, and the preventative measures that can be taken go here  – https://www.gov.za/news/events/health-awareness-events/stroke-week-0 – In essence, the prevention of strokes is about making good lifestyle choices, – i.e., don’t smoke or consume excessive alcohol, practice a healthy diet and exercise regularly etc.

All critical illnesses can take a massive financial toll

Just as medical professionals will suggest living better lifestyles and taking preventative measures to prevent the aforementioned critical illnesses, as financial advisers with a responsibility to protect our clients’ finances, we observe that these critical illnesses take a massive toll without financial protection!

It is of utmost importance, therefore when creating a financial plan, we always include an element of protection against the dread diseases we can all unexpectedly fall victim to, sometimes even despite making the best lifestyle choices.

Trust Hereford Group’s finance specialists

Critical Illness (or Dread Disease) Cover, Income Protection (should the illness become protracted, putting you out of work for an extensive period) and Life Insurance for your family’s financial well-being if you succumb to such an illness, are all recommended by our Hereford Group Financial Advisors.

This is not to sell policies but to ensure that critical illness will not rob you or your family of the great life and retirement you so richly deserve. Talk to us – we’ve got your back!

Just as we need to be aware of heart health, however, we also need to accept that should we become critically ill with a heart issue we can seriously erode our finances and lose all that we have worked for.

Women are great investors – so plan now for retirement!

Having celebrated our women this month on National Women’s Day, it’s not surprising to learn that, apart from being strong, resilient people, many women are smart investors.

Some of the best people in finance today are women, and at Hereford Group we are proud of our female Financial Advisors and the many other women playing pivotal roles in the company.

Risk-averse can be advantageous

As we all know, taking some risk when investing can be necessary to experience more rapidgrowth but in certain circumstances being risk-averse can be much more advantageous. Research has shown that women, in general, tend to be more risk-averse, making them excellent candidates for long-term investments like retirement plans.

Women tend to switch less and hold on to the investments they make, but like their male counterparts, they are astute enough to recognise the benefits of retirement policies that also carry tax benefits.

The magic of RAs

Retirement Annuities (RAs) are a great example of this as it is a tax-saving retirement investment with generally great returns designed for those who want to save towards retirement. It is ideal for entrepreneurs but can also be taken in addition to any existing pension or provident funds in which you already participate.

A substantial amount of your taxable income can be utilised towards the premiums for this,so it is a no-brainer as retirement investments go. They can only be drawn at age 55 so it is a safe long-term investment which allows you to take up to a third in cash and the rest is paid out as a pension.

Hereford group recognise individual needs

Whether you are male or female, a smart investor or not, our Financial Advisors at HerefordGroup have the experience and expertise to create a retirement and wealth creation program perfectly suited to your unique needs.

We understand that everyone is different and this is one of the things that have made us so successful over the 30 years that we have been assisting South Africans from all walks of life to have a better, brighter futureso talk to us today!
