Resilient Women overcome their financial challenges!

Celebrating the Strength of Women Facing Financial Challenges

This month, we stop to celebrate National Women’s Day, honouring women from all walks of life.

While many women indeed hold positions of power and serve as CEOs in top corporations, we take the time to celebrate all women. Every woman, regardless of her role, constantly faces risks and unexpected challenges. We honour their foresight and resilience in caring for their financial prospects.

The Impact of Sudden Critical Illness

One of life’s most unexpected challenges is the sudden onset of a critical illness or disability. For women who are the sole breadwinners in their families, this can have devastating consequences. Breast and cervical cancers alone affect thousands of South African women every year. Despite their resilience, regular medical checkups and screenings are essential for better chances of survival and full recovery.

The Importance of Financial Protection

Even those who recover often face significant medical bills and long periods of unemployment. Protecting one’s income through Dread Disease cover and income protection should be a crucial part of any financial plan for the future, ensuring the security of one’s wealth and family.

The Hereford difference

Hereford Group is renowned for one significant difference which is that we view every individual and business as different and unique. We understand the issues of every woman we honour and our financial Advisors are trained to offer the best possible advice – which will always include the protection of one’s income and family as well as wealth creation.

Talk to us today and be one of the resilient women who overcome financial challenges too!

Resilient Women overcome their financial challenges!

This month we celebrate National Women’s Day when we honour women from all walks of life.

Although many women now occupy positions of power and CEO’s chairs in top corporations, these are not the only women who are honoured. The many multi-tasking women who tend to their children and work for a living to bring home the bacon are the real heroes of our society – and every woman still constantly faces risks and unexpected challenges.

The curse of sudden critical illness

Not the least of life’s unexpected downturns is the sudden onset of a dread disease or some sort of disability which, to a woman who is the sole breadwinner in the family (and many South African women are), can have devastating consequences.

Breast and cervical cancers alone affect the lives of thousands of South African women every year and regardless of how resilient they are, it takes prevention, through regular medical checkups and screenings, to give all a better chance of survival and full recovery.

Financial protection is essential

Even those who recover though many face huge medical bills and long periods of unemployment. The protection of one’s income can save one’s wealth and family so Dread Disease cover and income protection should always be a part of any financial plan for the future.

The Hereford difference

Hereford Group is renowned for one significant difference which is that we view every individual and business as different and unique. The importance of maintaining wellness in the workplace

July is corporate wellness month when we are reminded of the great importance of maintaining wellness in the workplace! Employers and employees alike would agree with this as a constantly ill workforce means poor productivity and a toxic, stressful, unhealthy work environment is not good for maintaining office morale either.

As one observer puts it ‘’Corporate Wellness Month” was created with the very idea of showcasing the importance of maintaining a satisfying work culture and the direct correlation between professional wellness and a happy and stress-free individual.’’ A key factor is solid medical benefits for all employees.

Healthcare solutions

Hereford Group, always seeking better ways for businesses to succeed and create a healthy work culture has devised a range of healthcare solutions for employers which, in summary, include…

Personalised Analysis – We evaluate the demographic profile of your medical aid membership, discuss your specific requirements and prepare the most suitable alternatives.

Healthcare policy drafting – We assist your organisation to formulate healthcare policies and ensure that your management has a clear vision regarding all aspects of healthcare financing.

Legislation – We help you navigate ever-changing legislation to ensure you are well-informed and can act accordingly.

Forming a medical aid committee – This ensures a positive approach to healthcare financing, with all parties in your organisation involved and represented.

Member education – Assists you in navigating benefit options, understand how the medical scheme operates, and best manage the usually limited cover.

Ongoing member communication – ensuring the ongoing understanding and communication of changes in the medical scheme.

Dedicated care – We appoint a dedicated consultant to manage all aspects of the service and assistance to your employees.

Post-retirement medical funding – Utilising a pre-funding calculator, members can calculate this future liability and pre-fund for this expense.

The health of your employees should never be compromised! Independent, objective, and ongoing guidance is critical in a complex private healthcare industry fraught with ever-changing legislation. Talk to a Hereford specialist today about how we can assist your business to grow and prosper by maintaining a happy, healthy workforce!

Mental illness can happen to anyone

‘Mental Illness Awareness Month’ reminds us that mental illness concerns everyone. In our last article, we referred to corporate wellness and the importance of maintaining a healthy workplace environment. Mental illness very much aligns with this.

A few years ago, the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that depression is the leading cause of ill health and disability, with 7.5% of people living with disability in 2015. ‘’With work-related stress and healthcare costs on the rise, the need for corporate wellness cannot be overstated.’’

What can we do?

Employers must recognise the need to avoid work-related stress by having reasonable expectations and ensuring the work environment is conducive to a relaxed atmosphere. We all, however, need to take action to try to avoid what is now commonly referred to as neurodivergence. This can include Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia and others. So, what can we do about it?

A fit body is a fit mind

In an article about this ‘Mind Wise’ says, ‘’Studies have shown that exercise can alleviate anxiety and depression while also reducing the risk of physical illnesses. Individuals living with mental illness often face shorter lifespans and are at a higher risk of developing diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.’’

Relaxation techniques and pastimes

Yoga and other forms of relaxed movement like dancing and swimming or just taking peaceful walks and long baths all help one to wind down after facing the stresses of the day. This assists with better sleep too – essential to mental well-being.

Financial peace of mind

One of the greatest forms of stress is dealing with inadequate financial protection against the unexpected – like critical illnesses. Dread disease cover for the critically ill, and income protection particularly for people not deemed to be critically ill but who might need long periods of mental rehabilitation, are essential.

With over 30 years of experience assisting people to grow and protect their income, Hereford Group is critically aware that mental illness can happen to anyone, so talk to one of our Financial Advisors to ensure it is far less likely to happen to you because you will have the best medicine of all – peace of mind!

Fathers owe it to their young to protect health and wealth!

There are many celebrations and anniversaries in South Africa in June. Some simply make us aware of important issues like ‘Men’s Health Awareness Month’ and ‘National Cancer Survivor’s Day’ on the 4th, and others like Father’s Day and Youth Day, which both fall this year on the 16th, remind us of who we are and how far we have come.

All these celebrations and anniversaries, however, have something very important in common. They relate to men, many of whom are fathers and their young and the great importance of a father’s responsibility to the young through health awareness and income protection. After all, if a father ends up being critically ill, or worse still dying because of neglecting their health and protecting their income, their young will be severely affected.

Without money, a young person is unlikely to be educated in the manner that they deserve, and this in turn leads to the possibility of fewer job opportunities and a lower income, all of which can impact the rest of their life. It is not fair then to say that fathers owe it to their young to protect their health and wealth!

A two-pronged solution

Exactly how do we go about achieving this then? Well, firstly we can do everything possible to try to diminish our chances of contracting critical illnesses. Prostate cancer for example is a common men’s cancer which can successfully be treated (as National Cancer Survivor’s Day reminds us), but only usually when detected in its early stages.

This means ensuring you have regular health check-ups and blood tests with a medical professional from the age of 40 – and especially if you detect any of the known symptoms of Prostate cancer.

It’s all about prevention, and although we can’t always prevent dread diseases, this greatly improves our chances.

Life cover and income protection are essential.

The second prong in our two-pronged solution is to ensure that no matter what happens to you, your young will have the best chance in life and there are two ways to do this.

Income protection – On the assumption that if you have contracted a critical illness and you have Dread Disease cover, but this has just covered the extensive medical bills and your illness continues for some time, you need to ensure that your loss of income is replaced with effective income protection. Failing this you will start diminishing the wealth you have created so far and that could affect your young’s education and more.

Life Cover – The most affordable protection for your family, with the highest return, should you unfortunately succumb to your illness, is Life Insurance Cover. It pays out immediately to the stated beneficiaries and can prevent your Spouse and your young from suffering great financial difficulties.

Hereford Group serves every generation.

Hereford Group has been around for 30 years now, which means we have simultaneously served some fathers and their offspring as they have come of age to begin their wealth-creation journey. We have also seen the great benefit that our younger clients derived from having a father around and learning about financial discipline from them as they grew.

Ensuring wealth protection enables your young to be educated and have a chance in life – no matter what. So talk to us today about Life insurance and protecting your wealth – you will never regret it and your young will thank you for it!

Have a heart for your young and protect your heart and wealth!

As you know, we at the Hereford Group are by no means medical health experts, however we do know that your health can impact your wealth greatly. Being ‘Men’s Health Awareness Month’ and ironically Father’s Day and Youth Day all in the same month, we are focussing in June on men’s health issues – and how men can protect themselves and their wealth. Why their wealth? Well, if one becomes the victim of a critical illness the financial implications can be massive, and nothing will erode the wealth you have created faster than this type of setback!

So, what happens if we allow our wealth to be diminished? Usually, it is our family and our young who are going to suffer the consequences so, as a father, you have a duty to ensure that you not only do everything you can to prevent critical illness but also ensure that your wealth is protected should it happen to you!

Get a healthy heart with this triple lifestyle bypass…

As it happens, this month we also have been made aware of the importance of heart health during ‘World Heart Rhythm Week’ and this is so crucial to our overall well-being. Apart from the regular annual medicals we should all undergo after the age of 40, what can we do to maintain a heart-healthy lifestyle?

  • Eat well to stay at a healthy weight – The first thing Doctors will do after a heart episode is usually change your diet to control cholesterol, blood pressure and weight.
  • Get active and manage stress – A regular exercise programme, consisting of mostly aerobic exercises like walking, swimming, and cycling is essential, and make sure that you take time for stress-relieving activities too.
  • Quit smoking and moderate alcohol intake – So much research has been done to prove the devastating effects of smoking on your heart and health in general that it is incredible that anyone still smokes at all.

…and a triple whammy for income protection

There are also three ways to ensure that if you are struck down with a serious heart issue you are protecting your wealth and your family …

  • Critical Illness Cover – Pays a lumpsum amount usually sufficient to cover extra medical expenses and at least a certain amount of income during the period of an illness that stops you from working for a while.
  • Income Protection – For extended periods of illness that deprive you of your income, it is better to have Income Protection cover as well.
  • Life Cover – This is something that everyone with dependants should have as it is affordable for all and can pay out a substantial sum if your life is unexpectedly cut short.

Consult the professionals

There is much more to protecting your heart health and your income than the basics we have covered here. Just as you would consult a heart specialist if you had to experience heart issues, you should consult a financial specialist if you wish to know more about income and life protection.

Hereford Group has an expert team of Financial Advisors, highly trained and skilled in their chosen profession and, just as many Doctors believe that helping others is a calling, we too have ‘a heart’ to help all those who wish to protect their health, their wealth and subsequently their young!

Talk to us today about your specific financial challenges and requirements – and look after that ticker – It is, after all, the only one you have!

Is vaping really any healthier than smoking?

In a previous article, we spoke about the great initiative that takes place on the 31st of May this year known as World No Tobacco Day. It gives our youth the platform to object to the tobacco industry and the harmful effects of smoking on our health, but unfortunately, there seems to be some misconception amongst many of our youth and some adults that vaping is significantly better and quite harmless. The question is, therefore, ‘’ Is vaping really any healthier than smoking?’’

How ‘cool’ is Vaping?

Vaping is, in fact, considered to be quite fashionable and it is an industry growing as rapidly as the tobacco industry did in its heyday. The reality is however that the World Health Organisation view vaping, or e-cigarettes, as potentially very harmful.

This WHO report says, ‘’There are many different types of e-cigarettes, which are the most common type of electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) and electronic non-nicotine delivery system (ENNDS). These systems heat a liquid to create aerosols that are inhaled by the user. These so-called e-liquids may or may not contain nicotine (but do not contain tobacco). They also typically contain additives, flavours and chemicals that can be harmful to people’s health.

Currently, 88 countries have no minimum age at which e-cigarettes can be bought and 74 countries have no regulations in place for these harmful products. E-cigarettes target children through social media and influencers, with at least 16,000 attractive flavours. Even brief exposure to e-cigarette content on social media is associated with greater intention to use these products, as well as more positive attitudes toward e-cigarettes.’’

Lung disease and other illnesses associated with vaping

According to a John Hopkins Medical report “Emerging data suggests links to chronic lung disease and asthma, as well as associations between dual use of e-cigarettes and smoking with cardiovascular disease. You’re exposing yourself to all kinds of chemicals that we don’t yet understand and that are probably not safe.” One would have to say, therefore, that as a way to quit smoking (providing the intention is carried through), vaping may be acceptable but not if vaping becomes a replacement for the smoking habit.

Critical illnesses need no encouragement

It is bad enough that many thousands of people in our country alone will be the victims of a critical illness within the next few years without adopting any habits that will increase one’s chances of contracting one. The suffering alone is bad enough, but consider the financial implications of this too. Many of these people will become totally bankrupt (or at least have their finances severely depleted) if such an event occurs and should the illness be fatal many families are also left financially crippled.

A power-packed financial protection package

It stands to reason then that you should speak to your Financial Advisor about ensuring that in the event of such occurrences, your family and finances will be fully protected and, all being well, once you have recovered you will be right back on track to creating the long term wealth you always aspired to.

Life insurance, the most affordable of all insurances, together with Critical Illness cover and Income protection is a triple-action insurance package that assists you in dealing with every outcome of critical illness. Regardless of how long you may be derailed, you will have a handsome payout to deal with any financial shortfalls for expensive medical treatment, your loss of income fully replaced, and in the worst case scenario your loved ones will be able to continue to live comfortably and have a positive future.

Smoking and critical illness are inextricably linked

No matter how much smokers wish to deny or ignore it medical evidence shows that smoking and critical illness are inextricably linked. We are reminded of this with many worldwide initiatives that try to reduce the number of smokers, particularly amongst the young. One of the most significant of these is World No Smoking Day, which takes place this year on May 31st

A platform for protesting youth

It is a noble initiative which, as the World Health Organisation puts it, ‘’will give a platform to young people across the world, who are calling for the tobacco industry to stop targeting them with products that are harmful to their health. Young people globally are calling on governments to adopt policies that shield them from the manipulative practices of tobacco and related industries, including the relentless marketing of their dangerous products through social media and streaming platforms.’’

It is comforting to know that our youth are aware of the enormous dangers of smoking tobacco in particular (although vaping is not much better and we will look at that in a future article) and want to make others aware of this.

The stats don’t lie

So, smokers everywhere of all ages if you don’t believe how damaging smoking can be you can’t ignore the tried and tested medical research that shows it to be one of the primary causes of:

  • Lung Cancer – and over 10 other types of Cancer, Including Colon, Cervix, Liver, Stomach and Pancreatic Cancer
  • COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
  • Heart disease
  • Stoke
  • Asthma
  • Ectopic pregnancy, which is when a fertilized egg implants somewhere other than the uterus – and premature, underweight babies
  • Diabetes
  • Blindness, Cataracts and Age-Related Macular Degeneration

So, it’s obvious that continuing to smoke is pretty much taking your life into your own hands and why many insurers and medical aids heavily penalise those who do.

Protecting your wealth and your family

Whether you are a smoker or not, unfortunately, you can fall victim to critical illness (smoking just makes it more likely) and it usually happens unexpectedly too, so it is important to ensure that your wealth profile has certain covers in place to protect the wealth you have accumulated so far and your family.

Critical illness cover gives you a vital lumpsum payout in the event of this happening to you to cover what will no doubt be several significant costs that your medical aid and gap cover will not cover, plus some income during your period of being out of the loop.

Income protection covers you for any income lost even if your period of illness is extensive. This is essential to ensure that your misfortune does not badly erode your finances, and finally Life cover (Something that we should all have as a matter of course) will cover your family in the event of the worst-case scenario and they are left to fend for themselves.

We are currently in the throes of a very busy travel period with many people tagging time onto the Easter weekend and many more that will be taking advantage of the time at the end of the month leading up to the May 1st Worker’s Day celebrations.

Travel, and motor vehicle travel in particular, as enjoyable as it can be to bung the family into the car and hit the open road, also unfortunately always carries with it a high-risk element. During these times that risk greatly increases and an example of this is that last Easter the road death toll rose a whopping 37% from 184 in 2022 to 252 in 2023!

Facing reality is not negativity

It is a human tendency to ignore such facts and say ‘’well I’m a careful driver so it won’t happen to me’’ but remember that in almost all accidents at least one party was not the cause of the accident but falls victim to it. It is our responsibility therefore, as Financial Advisors, not to be negative but to be realists and to advise our clients that as important as it is to do a checklist before you travel protecting your family takes more than a safety check on your car!

We advise, therefore, that should you be an accident victim who possibly suffers serious injury that could result in permanent or even temporary disability it is essential to have income protection and disability cover in place. Should you not have this, whatever wealth you have created to that point could be severely drained by costly medical expenses and an extensive period of not earning a salary.

The great benefits of Life cover

For your loved one’s sake, if not for your own, remember that you could also fall victim to a fatal accident so at the very least have Life cover in place. Apart from being the most affordable insurance with the greatest payout for the lowest investment should your life be cut short it has many other benefits too. Some of these are…

  • Life insurance pays out a lump-sum benefit upon your death, which gives your heirs the necessary funds to cover funeral and other financial expenses and it can replace your income. NB – Be sure to state the beneficiaries though as this can expedite the payout process
  • Life insurance payouts are generally tax-free. Ask your Financial Advisor to ensure that this is the case
  • Life insurance can also have living benefits as certain policies pay out if you develop critical illness and some even provide savings which can contribute to your retirement savings.

Aspire to protect your family – and your wealth!

We at Hereford Group, with over more than 30 years of providing expert financial advice to thousands of people (many of whom, happily, are still loyal clients), know that life often takes very unexpected turns. It is for this reason that we ensure that within the wealth creation strategies we create the protection of the wealth you have already attained and your family are equally as important as your investment and retirement plans.

Talk to us today and discover the Hereford Group difference for yourself. What places us head and shoulders above our competition is not just the wide range of financial products we offer – it is the understanding that although every individual and business is unique, certain financial principles remain the same for all. The only thing worse than being a victim – is being an unprepared one!

Health preservation and financial protection are determined by the choices we make!

Towards the end of April every year we celebrate our Freedom Day. This is a big deal in South Africa as it commemorates the first free and fair elections in which all South Africans could vote held on the 27th of April 1994, exactly 30 years ago. This time reminds us that we now enjoy many personal freedoms including the freedom of choice, and the choices we make in life can be what shape our futures.

This month we also celebrate International Health Awareness Month, reminding us that we should at all times be cognisant of the risks we face and this will affect the choices that we make to ensure that, to the best of our ability, we retain good health and well-being.

Choosing to preserve our health

As wealth experts, we do refer to the health experts on these matters, but in choosing the preservation of our health some of the wise decisions would be to…

  • Exercise regularly and sleep consistently – for at least a half hour a day in the case of the former and a minimum of 6 to 8 hrs a night in the case of the latter
  • Go for regular medical checkups – It is advised that these should be once every second year after the age of 40 and every year from the age of 50. These should include blood tests and any other relevant tests or necessary screenings
  • Live a healthy, preventative lifestyle – Don’t smoke (or vape) and prevent the abuse of alcohol, caffeine and preservatives in food. Maintain a healthy diet – and remember that the key to good living is always maintaining a balance!

Unfortunately, no matter how much we try to preserve our health, accidents can happen and critical illnesses can befall us unexpectedly, but by doing these things we can greatly minimise the damage done and give ourselves a far better chance of faster recovery and survival.

At the same time, if this should happen we need to have made some wise choices regarding the protection of the wealth we have created up to this point as it can severely deplete our financial reserves. So, it appears that both health preservation and financial protection are determined by the choices we make!

Choosing financial freedom

Just as being aware of our health means we need to do constant prevention in the form of lifestyle and exercise as well as regular checkups, choosing financial freedom also means protecting our wealth by being prepared for the worst that can happen.

For you to protect your wealth you need to take cognisance of health risks and protect your income and your family. Some of the ways to do this would be to have your Financial
Advisor put in place…

  • Critical Illness (Disability) cover – This gives you a substantial payout if you suddenly become the victim of several listed critical illnesses which enables you to cover what will probably be greater expenses than those covered by medical aid and gap cover and survive during a normal period of recovery;
  • Income protection – We never know, but the period of being unable to work might become extensive and it is then that you will wish you had included income protection too within your wealth preservation portfolio;
  • Life insurance – Regardless of if you become a victim of critical illness, the reality is that none of us know if our lives may be cut short. Life insurance is the cheapest and best cover you can take to ensure that your family is financially protected should the worst happen – and in some cases, it can also be used in the ‘living years’ towards retirement – or as income protection in the case of disability. Talk to your Financial Advisor about these options.

Hereford Group – the wisest choice

Hereford Group has not been one of South Africa’s top providers of financial growth over the last 30 years for nothing. We are unique in that we understand that every individual and business is different and in accordance with our circumstances we will all make different choices.

We are here to ensure that when it comes to creating wealth you cover all the bases, providing you not only with a better life and a better retirement but most importantly protecting your wealth and your family during your lifetime – and with the legacy you leave.

Yes, health preservation and financial protection are determined by the choices we make, so let us assist you in always making the right ones!

Cancer – prevention and financial protection for women.

[et_pb_section admin_label=”section”]
[et_pb_row admin_label=”row”]
[et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text”]In March we are focusing primarily on Women as it is the month in which we celebrate International Women’s Day. We are fully behind the equality of women in every sphere of life and as Financial Advisors, we try to help women have equal footing when it comes to creating and protecting wealth.

Women’s cancers

Not restricted to women but often described as the primary ‘Women’s cancers’ are breast and cervical cancer, two cancers that take a huge toll on the lives of many thousands of women globally. This means that even if they are not fatal (and good prevention and early protection greatly lower the odds of this) they can cause long periods of serious illness, and of course being out of work, which in turn can badly deplete the finances of the woman or her family.

What advice then can we give? Let’s look at it in 2 parts…

Health protection
As Financial Advisors, we recommend you protect your health with regular check-ups with the medical professionals and so we leave the specifics up to the experts. Of course, in the case of both cancers, lifestyle preventatives are also recommended like not smoking, regular exercise and a healthy diet.

Wealth protection
Equally as important is having preventative measures in place financially in case you are suddenly struck with a critical illness. Dread disease cover will ensure that you get a significant enough payout to not only pay the relevant medical bills not covered by medical aid, but probably enable a few months of serious illness without too much financial impact.

In case the inability to work becomes long term it is an excellent idea to have income protection cover as well and these two covers are usually combined.

Seek professional help
Just as when you contract any type of illness you seek the help of professional medical practitioners, so it should be with entrusting your wealth matters to a qualified Financial Advisor. Hereford Group advisors are trained to structure a wealth profile that covers every aspect of financial growth in a holistic way which will always include the protection of the wealth you have accumulated when the unexpected occurs.

Talk to us today about ensuring the future you aspire to and keeping you on track, no matter how many times you may get derailed! [/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column]
